Two prominent Danish female pop singers released new singles this month (the other being Kill J), and they couldn’t exist further apart. Where Kill J is all cool restraint – MØ’s “Kamikaze” is a to-the-wall Diplo helmed “summer hit”.
Since the huge success of “Lean On”, MØ has become Diplo’s go to vocalist/Scandinavian vibe generator. And rightly so. On “Kamikaze”, she is puzzling, playful and welcoming; her energy is undeniable. This is a festival starter, filled with the riff of a hypnotic Eastern stringed instrument along the calling card of MØ cheerleader shouts.
The formula works, Diplo skitter skatters his in-vogue trappy beats, and MØ performs as genuine and spirited as ever. It is just a bit light on. The track sounds massive, but it just floats away after hearing, lost in the summery breeze from which it originated. If “No Mythologies to Follow” is anything to go by, this is just a glimpse into a much deeper album.
But for now, you can sip something sweet and MØ dance till your heart’s filled.
