Danish art-pop band Blaue Blume crash into the new year with the surprisingly positive single “Crush”. A song about being happily in love with someone and feeling swarms of butterflies inside.

Mastery of expression through music

I was all here for the desperate outbursts of emotion on their latest album “Bell of Wool”. With “Crush” the band now illustrates the lovely light feeling of being in love. An easy-going pop song with catchy lines, still it pierces your soul. Is it singer Jonas Schmidt’s ability to extraordinarily phrase and voice feelings? Is it the infectious indie-guitar by Buster Jensen, or Søren Buhl Lassen’s distinctive way of putting everything together? Who knows, but with “Crush” Blaue Blume once again prove their mastery of expression through music. Once more, they do so in the most unpretentious way.

“’Crush’ is pretty much just about getting your relationship to sparkle again in the midst of having small kids and all the practical stuff involving every-day life. The song is about dancing and making out again with the one you went out of your way to get. Reminding yourself that you really shouldn’t take it for granted. A tribute to girlfriends and boyfriends,” singer Jonas explains.

Blaue Blume’s “Crush” feels like coming alive again

“Crush” starts with two seconds of dystopian noise, but quickly switches to a catchy indie-guitars with up-beat drums. This shift feels like coming out of a cave, straight into bright sunlight. Quite unusual for Blaue Blume’s music, this song actually makes you want to dance. Perfect for spring season coming along, “Crush” is like a big ray of sunshine, making flowers, animals and humans come alive again after a long winter. It’s about how easy and natural hope can feel, even after months of suffocating darkness.

Blaue Blume give a wonderful example for how pop music does not have to be boring beats with ever-the-same meaningless lyrics. “Crush” is pop music, but this band somehow makes it so distinctively their own. I am failing at explaining how. But in the end, does it really matter? “I don’t care if noone knows about us. Your kiss is enough to know it’s a crush,” Jonas sings.

Blaue Blume are going on tour through Denmark this spring, starting in Copenhagen 1. March. I can only imagine this song being an absolute joy to see them play live.
