The definition of a cover on Wikipedia says: “In popular music, a cover version or cover song, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording of a previously recorded, commercially released song by someone other than the original artist or composer.”
Sounds simple, sounds clear. And yet, Kill J managed to somehow turn the understanding of the word “cover” by what she did with Aqua’s hit song from the 90’s – “Barbie Girl”.
This composition was like a huge bomb of awesomeness falling on us in the end of 2015.
When you have a reference to the original, maybe you recognize it in Kill J’s version. I would never come up with it by myself! That one song can sound so different. That a cover can be so independent from the original. That an artist can release so much new, fresh things from a (to be honest) simple pop hit, which already has 19 years under its belt!
Kill J writes on her SoundCloud “My dystopian take on a classic. A feminist manifest”. And a manifest it is, indeed. Musical high class, showing that cover doesn’t always mean “copy-paste”-attitude.
We can’t wait what Kill J will show in 2016 – and this composition made us even more impatient for news from her! Stream Kill J’s cover of “Barbie Girl” on SoundCloud:
